Our story
Born from a homecoming
Nostos is a Greek word with no perfect English translation. It means the longing to return home — and the bittersweet joy when you finally do. It's why we named the company what we did.
Our Story
Νόστος — A Homecoming
Nostos — νόστος — is an old Greek word for homecoming. Not just the act of returning somewhere, but the ache that pulls you back to a place that shaped you. Homer used it to describe Odysseus’s ten-year journey home from Troy. We use it because it’s the closest word we’ve found for what this company is actually about.
My family’s roots trace back to Greece, and every visit back has felt less like travel and more like remembering something I’d forgotten I knew.
Nostos Trading Co. started with a simple frustration: too much of what reaches American shelves under a “Greek” label has traveled so far from its origin — blended, anonymous, sitting in warehouses for who-knows-how-long — that it’s lost any real connection to the place it came from. We wanted to bring back things with their story still intact.
We started with olive oil, because it’s the clearest expression of what we’re after. Our search led us to Nemea, in Corinthia, in the Peloponnese, and to Sellas Olive House — a family producer pressing oil since 1992, using mechanical extraction only, no shortcuts, no blending for volume. Every bottle we import is traceable back to that single producer, that single region, that single harvest.
But olive oil is just the beginning. Greece has always exported far more than its most famous product — honey worked the old way, wine from grapes that don’t grow anywhere else, oregano cut wild off a hillside, olives cured by hand. Our aim is to build Nostos into the place you go for all of it: a small, growing collection of Greek goods, each one chosen because we found the producer behind it and decided their work deserved a table in America.
The standard doesn’t change as we grow. Small batches. Direct relationships with the people who make the thing, not a distributor three steps removed. Nothing added to the shelf just to fill it.
When you open something from Nostos, we want you to taste more than a product. We want you to taste the place it came from — the sun on a hillside, the quiet, exacting work of a family that’s done this for generations. That’s the homecoming we’re chasing, one product at a time. We hope you’ll feel it too.
Νόστος. Welcome home.

Values
What we believe
Honesty over marketing
We won’t call something ‘premium’ unless we can prove it. Our lab results are available on request.
Fair to the growers
We pay above-market prices to the families we work with. Good oil requires good farming. Good farming requires fair pay.
Small batches, always
We import in quantities we can stand behind. When a harvest is sold out, it’s sold out.
"Nostos isn’t just what we named the company. It’s why we started it."
